Did someone say…

Low maintenance?

Split Leaf Philodendron

This is my first year with a split leaf philodendron. They love water and have an absolute beautiful shape. So beautiful, that mine is actually the center piece of my living room. I get many compliments on it. When I’ve left them outside before, their leaves burn very easily so we don’t do that anymore. I prefer to have this plant indoors in a pot with no hole. The plant requires more water than others, so not having a hole allows the water not to drain, and therefore requires me to water it less (I love less work). You do need to watch for mold in your soil when you do this. Don’t drench the soil when it’s already damp.I have another philodendron in a propagation vase. It has no soil and flourishes in only water. It has made some pups, but if you truly want your plant to get bigger this would not be the best way. It looks beautiful in a high lit room with a colored glass vase and is truly low maintenance.

Neon Pothos

This plant can take abuse. Anytime I have put this plant on a porch it burns so easily but inside it does great. I have gone 6 months without watering and it may have one brown leaf but thrives in the chaos of a procrastinator. It is somewhat of a slow grower but can get fluffy and vine like when it does get bigger. It also offers a lighter bright pop of green compared to other plants and can do just fine in a room without much light. I have two in my house and love the way they look. One is about 5 years old and one is two and with the neglect they endure from me they really haven’t grown much but are still attractive. A clipping will also do great in a propagation vase.

Swiss Cheese Plant

I have been through some trial and tribulations with this plant but finally have it figured out. This little baby must have a window and you do need to remember to water it. Ya’ll are probably rolling your eyes like duh, it’s a plant. When I say I abuse the plants above ^ I wasn’t joking. It does well hanging or having something to crawl up on and twist around. Water the soil when it’s dry- I do it weekly. It needs bright indirect sunlight. If you kill it, just cut the dead parts off and it usually grows back. FOR THE LAZY- this is a great propagation plant. I put one in a cute little vase and just ignore it. It does amazing in my kitchen window and has a beautiful profile.

CONCLUSION

  1. Propagation is your friend- it requires no soil, it allows you to split up your plants and make new ones, you barley have to remember to water it, it can be decorative.

  2. Having real plants in your house in an unspoken flex and that’s a fact.

  3. If you have an insanely busy life and you can’t even keep a fish alive, I’d recommend a pothos.

  4. When in doubt, consider hydration, drainage, and amount of sunlight. If you notice your plant is not doing well change one of these things at a time. It’s like a science experiment.

  5. I wish you the best of luck! I hope I saved you some money.
